Giants
by Jason McCall
We all love the big guy at the party, the one who can lift two kegs out of the pickup, make the buffet cashier look for a manager, make the drunks get dry real fast. We like to brag to the girls about splitting pizzas and beer pitchers with him, spotting him at the gym. We don't mind standing next to him until he turns his shadow on us, turns the world dark and small. Then we only get close enough to dream of how big we could be if we stood on his shoulders and hacked at his neck.
Jason McCall is proud to admit that he loves blueberries, and he is proud to admit that he is an Alabama native. He currently teaches at the University of Alabama. He holds an MFA from the University of Miami, and his collections include Silver (Main Street Rag), I Can Explain (Finishing Line Press), and Dear Hero (winner of the 2012 Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize).
