The trunk
my brother found
was small, leather and old.
Dry as a bone, it smelled of sea,
of brine.

Salt tears
flooded the room
when we showed her the skin...
it was the last time we saw our
mother.



Deborah P Kolodji is the president of the Science Fiction Poetry Association, a member of the Haiku Society of America, and the editor of Amaze: The Cinquain Journal.
